Fortnite
Credit: Epic GamesItâs time to make the doughnuts, as it were. Fortnite is entering into a bit of a quiet time as far as regular season content goes: weâre now wrapping up our normal 10 weeks of challenges, but the first season of Chapter 2 is set to continue into February. Weâll be getting a holiday event in the coming days, no doubt, but other than that weâre not exactly sure how Epic is going to fill in the gap. One thing we do know, however, is that the competitive scene will still have plenty to do. Epic Games just announced Winter Royale 2019, a duos competition with some sizeable prizes attached.
Full dates and details are yet incoming, but hereâs the salient fact: Winter Royale will feature three separate days of duos tournaments, each with a $5 million pool, which is a hefty chunk of change, even if thatâs not all that uncommon for Fortnite.
We havenât seen the prize breakdown yet, but the post mentions that weâre getting platform-specific duos competitions in all server regions, so that seems like it will actually add up to a fairly large number of competitions within the tournaments, diluting the prize pool somewhat.
As we wait for details on that, thereâs some more competitive action in the much nearer future. The Fortnite Champion Series finals start tomorrow, December 6, and Epic is juicing viewership numbers by giving out free banners and sprays to anyone that tunes into an approved stream and has linked their Epic and Twitch accounts. Full details on how to do that here on Epicâs blog, but many already have their accounts linked from one of those free skin drops back in the day.
Iâll be interested in a big tournament like Winter Royale here in Chapter 2. I havenât paid much attention to the championship series, but the game is radically different than it was back, say, during the World Cup, and Iâm curious to check back in and see what high-level play looks like with drastically reduced mobility and considerably less wacky items.
Hopefully weâll get more details soon, on this and on the holiday event.
